Artist’s Statement
Instilled in every person is an innate need to understand the world and people around them. We observe and judge others, we try to manipulate how others perceive us, we decorate the spaces around us with things we like and are influenced by the things and people we admire.
I explore these concepts through ceramics, both a physical and visual medium, by experimenting with the ideas of the humanities, through culture, art, history, and theology. I interpret how humans strive to control others' understanding of ourselves, and question why people are drawn to certain histories and aesthetics. My work visualizes impressions of growth and change through colorful gradients and palettes, and fluid, organic ornamentations creating movement around my pieces. Tall vessels inspired by historical vase forms are a common theme in my pieces, representing individuals or people. I draw figures and icons from history, such as arches inspired by spiritual buildings found within many religions, and motifs and patterns found on stained glass and ancient ceramic vessels from across the world. All of these ideas contribute to how we personally understand the human experience and the universal experiences across cultures and history, and how we share it with others.
Ceramics is a unifying medium that has naturally occurred in every culture around the world as societies developed, and I use it to form an understanding of the human experience across the globe. My work translates these ideas into clear and exciting pieces that encourage deep consideration and thought on how we understand one another, and the world we share.
